Car Key Battery Replacement in Leicester — Try the Battery First. Then Call Us.

A fob that needs pressing twice, only works up close, or puts "key battery low" on the dash usually just needs a new coin cell — a two-minute job you can do at home, and we'll tell you so. If a fresh battery doesn't bring it back, the fob itself is the problem, and that is where we come in: repaired, replaced and programmed at your vehicle. Call 0333 772 1846 with your make, model and year and we'll tell you honestly which it is.

Battery or fob?

Most fob faults start with a flat battery. Here's how to tell.

The signs are familiar: you have to press the button two or three times, the car only unlocks when you are stood next to it, a keyless car stops noticing the key in your pocket, or the dashboard shows a “key battery low” message. In all of those cases the first thing to try is a new battery. Most fobs take a common coin cell — a CR2032 or CR2025 on many cars, a CR2450 or CR1620 on others — and the old cell or the handbook tells you which. Prise the case open at the notch with a plastic tool, note which way up the old cell sits, fit the new one and click it shut. Keyless cars will usually still start with a flat key battery by holding the fob against the start button or the spot marked in the handbook, so you are not stranded while you buy a cell.

A battery change on its own is rarely worth a call-out, so we will say so on the phone. When a fresh battery does not fix it, the fault is in the fob: worn buttons, a cracked circuit board, water inside the case, or a key that has lost its synchronisation with the car. That is where a mobile auto locksmith earns the call. Keyworx repairs fobs where that is sensible, replaces and programmes them where it is not, and does it at your vehicle in Leicester, Cambridgeshire and across the East Midlands.

  • Honest advice first

If it sounds like a battery, we tell you to try one before anyone sets off. No call-out fee for good advice.

  • Fob repair where it makes sense

Worn buttons, cracked shells and battery contacts can often be sorted without a new fob. We say which on the call.

  • Replacement fobs programmed on-site

When the electronics are gone we supply the right fob and code it to your car where it is parked.

  • Ownership checked first

V5C, photo ID or proof of purchase before we programme anything to your vehicle.

When a new battery isn't the fix

Four fob faults that look like a flat battery but aren't. Tell us which is yours.

01 · No response

New battery, still nothing

Check the cell is the right type and the right way up first. If it is, the contacts or the circuit board are usually at fault. We test the fob at the vehicle and tell you whether repair or replacement is the sensible route.

02 · Range

Only works up close

A weak cell is the usual cause, but a tired board or a damaged aerial track does the same. If a fresh battery makes no difference, the fob needs looking at.

03 · Buttons

Buttons worn or the case cracked

A new shell or button pad saves the fob and its programming. Where the board is damaged we replace the fob and programme it. See key fob replacement.

04 · Lost sync

Stopped working after the battery change

A few models drop their pairing when the cell is out for too long. Some re-sync with a sequence in the handbook; others need programming at the vehicle, which we do on the spot. See car key programming.

Not sure if it's the battery? Call 0333 772 1846 and describe what the fob is doing. We'll tell you straight whether to buy a cell or book us.

How it works when the fob is the problem

Try the battery, then tell us what happened

Make, model, year and what the fob does with a fresh cell in it. That usually tells us whether it is a repair or a replacement.

We confirm a price and an ETA

Before anyone sets off. The cost depends on the fob type and whether programming is needed, so we make it clear up front.

Quick ownership check on arrival

Photo ID and proof you're the keeper or authorised — V5C, photo ID or proof of purchase. The step a serious, accredited locksmith never skips.

Repaired or replaced, programmed and tested

The fob is fixed or a new one coded to the car, then lock, unlock and start are checked before we leave.

Car key battery questions

Battery or fob?

Most fobs use a coin cell, commonly a CR2032 or CR2025, with CR2450 and CR1620 on some makes. The type is printed on the old cell, and the handbook lists it. Fit the same type, the same way up.
Typically two to four years, depending on how often the fob is used and whether it is a keyless key that talks to the car constantly. Reduced range is usually the first sign it is on the way out.
On most cars, no. The code lives in the fob's memory, not the battery. A small number of models can lose synchronisation if the cell is out for a long time; the handbook gives a re-sync sequence for some, and the rest can be programmed again at the vehicle.
Check the cell type and orientation first, and that the contacts are clean and touching the cell. If it still does nothing, the fault is in the fob: contacts, buttons, board or lost pairing. Call us with the make, model and year and we'll tell you whether it is a repair or a replacement.
Yes, and for a straightforward cell swap that is fine. What they cannot do is repair or replace the fob or programme it to your car, which is the job when a new battery doesn't fix it.
Usually not. Most keyless cars start with a flat key battery if you hold the fob against the start button or the spot the handbook shows. It is a get-you-home measure, not a fix, so change the cell as soon as you can.
If it is just a battery, nothing from us: we'll tell you to buy a cell. If the fob needs repairing, replacing or programming, the price depends on the fob type and the vehicle, and we confirm it before anyone sets off, with no obligation.
