Ford Transit Key Replacement — Cut, Programmed and Tested at Your Van

Lost the key to a Transit, a Transit Custom or a Connect, snapped it in the door, or down to one worn remote? A mobile auto locksmith comes to your yard, your site or the roadside across Leicester and the East Midlands, cuts a new key and programmes it to the van there. No recovery truck, no dealer wait. Call 0333 772 1846 with the model and year, or type the reg into the quote form, and we'll confirm what your Transit needs and a price before anyone sets off.

The key to Britain's best-selling van, made at the van

The Transit family, the full-size Transit, the Transit Custom, the Connect and the Courier, is the best-selling van range in Britain, so a Transit key is the van key job a mobile locksmith is asked for most. It is also the one where a dealer visit costs a working day: the van has to get there, the key usually has to be ordered, and the appointment is rarely this week. Keyworx brings the blanks, the cutting machine and dealer-level programming equipment to wherever the Transit is parked, cuts the key, codes it to the immobiliser and checks lock, unlock and start before leaving. Every key we supply and programme carries a three-month warranty.

Which key does your Transit take?

It depends on the year. Transits built up to the 2013 to 2014 model change, the Mk6 and the Mk7, use Ford’s Tibbe key, with the remote either separate or built into the head. The Transit Custom, launched in 2012, and the full-size Transit from 2014 moved to a high-security two-track blade, usually on a flip remote, and the Transit Connect and Courier followed. Recent Transits and Customs can also have keyless start, which uses a proximity key instead of a blade. Whatever the key looks like, every Transit since the late 1990s has Ford’s PATS immobiliser: the key carries a transponder chip that has to be programmed to the van as well as cut. Tell us the year, or the reg, and we’ll know which one yours is.

All keys lost on a Transit

Losing every key is the most common Transit emergency, and it does not mean a tow or a new set of locks. We take the key data from the van, cut a key to code, programme it through the diagnostic socket and erase the lost keys from the immobiliser so they can no longer start the van. On many Transits the immobiliser only closes the job once two keys are present, so an all-keys-lost visit often ends with two working keys in your hand, which is your spare sorted at the same time.

Where we cover

Keyworx is Leicester-based and mobile across Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Cambridgeshire and the wider East Midlands, 24 hours a day: usually within the hour in Leicester, and the same day in Peterborough, Northampton, Corby, Kettering, Derby and Nottingham, with the ETA confirmed on the call. For other makes of van, see replacement van keys; for Ford cars, Ford car keys.

  • Transit, Custom, Connect, Courier

Older Tibbe-key vans, two-track flip keys and keyless models. Tell us the year and we'll confirm what yours needs before we set off.

  • Cut and programmed at the van

The blade cut to code and the chip programmed to Ford's PATS immobiliser where the van stands, then lock, unlock and start checked.

  • Lost keys erased

When a key is lost or stolen we remove it from the van's memory, so it can no longer start the van.

  • Ownership checked first

V5C, photo ID or proof of purchase, or the owner's authority for a company or leased van, before any key is cut.

What we do for Transit owners

Six jobs we're called to most. Tell us which is yours and we'll confirm what it needs, and what it costs, before we set off.

01 · All keys lost

No key at all? Made at the van in one visit

We read the key data from the van, cut to code, programme at the van and erase the lost keys. Many Transits need two keys programmed to finish the job, so you often leave with your spare as well. See lost car keys.

02 · Spare key

A second key before the only one goes missing

The cheapest Transit key is the one made while you still have a working key. Cut and programmed alongside the original in one visit; for a fleet, every van in a row. See spare car keys.

03 · Remote & fob

Buttons worn out, or locking that has stopped answering

Transit remotes take a hammering. A dead remote is often the battery; one that has lost its pairing can be paired again; a cracked case or worn buttons can go into a new shell, which our sister site Car Key Online stocks. See key fob replacement and key battery replacement.

04 · Snapped key

A blade snapped in the door or the ignition

We extract the broken piece, cut a fresh blade to code and fit it to your existing remote where the remote is still good. If the lock or the ignition barrel is damaged we replace it at the roadside. See broken key extraction and ignition repair.

05 · Locked out

Keys locked in the cab or the load bay

We open the Transit without damage and, if the keys are inside, you are back on the road the same visit. See locked out.

06 · Security

A Transit that has already been targeted

The Transit is one of the most stolen vans in the country. A Ghost immobiliser stops the engine starting without your PIN, even with a programmed key; a tracker finds the van if it is taken. The Transit in the photo above had a Ghost fitted in Peterborough. See Ghost immobiliser and vehicle trackers.

How a Transit key call-out works

Tell us the van and what's happened

Model, year and the reg; lost keys, a snapped blade, a dead remote or no spare. Type the reg into the quote form and it fills in the make and model, so we bring the right blank and the right data.

We confirm a price and an ETA

Before anyone sets off, so you can plan the day around it. Usually within the hour across Leicester, same day across the East Midlands.

Ownership check at the van

V5C, photo ID or proof of purchase, or the owner's or lease company's authority for a company van.

Cut, programmed and tested before we leave

Lock, unlock and start, checked in front of you, and any lost key erased. Ask for a spare while the kit is out.

Ford Transit key questions

Not sure which Transit key you have?

Call with the reg, or the model and year. We'll tell you which key the van takes, what it needs and what it costs, with no obligation.

0333 772 1846
It depends on three things: the year of the van, which decides the key type; whether you still have a working key; and whether you want a plain key, a remote key or a keyless one. A spare made alongside a working key is the smallest job; all keys lost is the largest. We confirm a clear price for your Transit before we set off, with no obligation, and it does not change at the van.
Call with the reg and where the van is. We come to it, read the key data from the van, cut and programme new keys there and erase the lost one so it can no longer start the van. Nothing needs towing, and no locks need changing unless you want them changed.
Partly, on older vans. The remote locking on many Mk6 and Mk7 Transits can be paired with an ignition sequence from the handbook, and with two working keys many Fords will accept a third from the driver's seat. With one key or none, or on a newer Transit, the immobiliser needs diagnostic equipment. A key that locks and unlocks but will not start the van has been paired, not programmed.
Often. If the buttons have faded but the van still starts, the remote battery is the usual cause and we can change it. If the van no longer recognises the key at all, the remote may have lost its pairing or the chip may have failed, and we pair it again or replace it at the van. See key battery replacement.
A spare made alongside a working key is usually done in under an hour at the van. All keys lost takes longer, because the key data has to be read first and some Ford systems build in a wait before they accept new keys. We give you a realistic time when you call.
Yes: the full-size Transit, the Custom, the Connect and the Courier, whether panel van, chassis cab, minibus or camper. The newest generation is worth a call first, as with any brand-new platform: tell us the year and we'll say exactly what is possible before you book.
The key does the same job either way: it is cut to the van's code and programmed to the same immobiliser. The difference is where and when. A dealer needs the van on site and usually orders the key in; we come to the van and normally finish in one visit. Every key we supply and programme carries a three-month warranty.
A Ghost immobiliser is the usual answer. It sits on the van's own wiring and stops the engine starting until your PIN is entered on the existing buttons, so a cloned or programmed key is not enough on its own. We fit them to Transits at your yard. See Ghost immobiliser.
Yes, always. V5C, photo ID or proof of purchase for a van you own. For a company or leased van, the owner's or lease company's authority plus your ID. If you're not sure what to have ready, ask on the call.
